Where did Jeans came from (A true Story)

A True Story

Where did Jeans Come from?

Jeans were first used by sailors in Genoa, a small town in Italy. They were made using denim, a raw material from France. For a long time, sailors had wanted pants that could be worn wet or dry and where the legs could be rolled up while mopping the deck. These jeans could also be washed by putting them in nets in the sea so that the sea water could bleach them.
Around the eighteenth century, jeans were made by mixing together a number of materials. With the increase in cotton plantations, 'jeans cloth' came to be made completely from cotton. Jeans are usually dyed with indigo and this gave the fabrics dark blue colour.

In1846, an enterprising man named Levi Strauss moved to California with his brothers. They sold cloth there, and he worked for them. At this time, many people were moving to California because there was gold there. Strauss went to look for gold too.
Strauss took a lot of cloth with him to San Francisco. He thought it would make good tents in the gold fields. But when he got there, he saw that people needed clothes more than they needed tents because clothes did not last very long in the gold fields. At first, Strauss made pants out of canvas. They were much stronger than other pants, lasted a long time, and were very comfortable. Soon, everyone was wearing them. He decided that he would stop looking for gold and would only make pants. He opened a small shop and made a lot of money by selling pants.

Strauss had brought some cloth from Genoa, a town in Italy. To Americans, this name sounded like 'jeans' so they started calling his pants 'jeans'. After a while, Strauss found a cloth even stronger than canvas. It came from a town in France called Nines. The French called it 'serge de Nimes' which means 'cloth from Nimes'. The Americans called it 'denim'. The cloth Strauss used was always blue, so people also called his pants 'blue jeans' and 'blue denims'.
The Levi Strauss and company was born in 1853. Even today, it is a leading American company known worldwide for its Levi's brand of denim jeans.

In 1866, Strauss introduced a leather label on the jeans. The label showed a picture of a pair jeans that was being pulled in opposite directions by two horses. This showed people how strong Levi's jeans were they couldn't be destroyed even by two horses.
Blue jeans gained popularity in the United States when Levi Strauss and Company introduced blue jean overalls in 1873. These jeans were quite sturdy and long-lasting and therefore these trousers were favoured by labourers who worked outdoors for long hours.
