• Under the Maurya empire reached the zenith of its power. The territory of the empire extended further and it became the largest in the ancient east. Ashoka issued largest number of edicts (inscriptions) which are important source of information about the Mauryas. The most important event of Ashoka's reign, however, was the conquest of Kalings on the shore of the Bay of Bengal in present Odisha. The conquest of Kalinga, indeed, was important from both strategic and commercial point of view Besides, the annexation helped to consolidate the empire. The conquest of Kalinga impacted the governmental policy as also the personal life of Ashoka.
